4 villages in guangdong
I got this cool image of China from Wikipedia, which is also a wealth of knowledge about these Seiyap. Of course, everyone seems to know about Toisan, maybe because there were many Chinese in Calgary who were from Toisan and we heard it spoken alongside Cantonese.
I have to admit I really didn't think much about where my parents were "from". I really just knew it was Macau and Canton. But REALLY my grandparents were from these neighbouring villages in China, as were the majority of Chinese who ended up leaving China to all corners of the world in the early (in western terms) days.
This is the info I got right from Wikipedia. These four villages were former counties in Southern Guangdong Province in China:
Sunwui
Hoiping
Toisan
Yanping
But I think actually that our Leung side came from something else "san". Clearly more investigating is needed.
